Israel at Seventy-Four
Tonight Israel started celebrating its seventy-fourth day of independence or Yom Haatzmaut to use the proper Hebrew term. There is lots to say about it. My personal reflection on this can be found on my old blog where I wrote a lengthy piece on it when Israel turned seventy. All of what I said then is relevant today.
As Israel has grown ever more successful economically and politically - witness the role it is playing behind the scenes with regards to Ukraine - the international pressure on it has at the same time accelerated. Anti-semitism is on the rise, the odious BDS campaign has traction across many universities and western media, and the threat of the US cutting a deal with Iran compromising Israel’s security is not off the table just yet. We cannot just support nations when they are the underdog. We must always stand up for freedom, democracy and a journey to peace and respect. That is why standing behind Israel remains a crucial commitment.
